Biography

I am a journalist and Emmy-nominated filmmaker based in Georgia. I am currently a Rosalyn Carter Fellow for Mental Health Journalism.

I studied Photojournalism and Religion at the University of Georgia and then worked as a photojournalist at a small, family-owned newspaper in Northern Indiana. The paper was starting the transition to prioritize their online presence and I quickly realized I had a lot to learn about the Internet. I got my Master’s from UNC-Chapel Hill as a Roy H. Park fellow, studying short documentary filmmaking and web design to give myself more tools to tell stories for the web. I made films for the Southern Coalition for Social Justice and was recruited to work on a national criminal justice campaign for the AFL-CIO. Then I moved to Washington, DC to work as a producer at the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting where I shot short documentary films, facilitated education programs, managed interns, curated exhibits in DC and New York, designed our most popular e-book Flight from Syria, and launched and grew our Instagram to more than 60k followers. I have worked with the New Yorker, ProPublica, and Instagram among others.

I have taught video workshops around the U.S. with the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting and have coached the NPPA Immersion Workshop. I am currently on the faculty of Mercer's Center for Collaborative Journalism

My work tends to focus on the human impact of larger systems.

I recently directed and produced an investigative documentary about a water pollution issue called Saving Juliette. The film is currently screening at festivals and has won multiple awards, including the Best Short Documentary at the 2022 American Conservation Film Festival.  I was a finalist for the Livingston Award in local reporting for this work.

I produced the podcast Prison Town, a narrative investigation using one prison in South Georgia as a case study to look at the Georgia Department of Corrections. It was nominated for a Peabody. Less than a year after we published, the state Senate unanimously approved a resolution that created a seven-member committee to examine “current issues impacting the ability of the Department of Corrections to operate secure and safe facilities and to ensure the welfare of both its staff and those in its custody.”

Fun fact: I'm a pandemic mom. I was interviewed by New York Magazine when I was expecting my first.
